The Ubar and the Peasant

It must have been over two years ago that a friend sent me a quote that he thought I'd be interested in. The quote was from Beasts of Gor, and though I'd read the book, I had missed the quote and hadn't really understood it's relevance to our Theatre or myself as a performer.

'I returned my attention to the puppet show. Now upon its tiny stage was being enacted the story of the Ubar and the Peasant. Each, wearied by his labours, decides to change his place with the other. Naturally this does not prove fruitful for either individual. The Ubar discovers that he cannot tax the bosk and the Peasant discovers that his grain cannot grow on the stones of the city streets. Each cannot stop being himself, each cannot be the other. In the end, of course, the Ubar returns gratefully to his throne and the peasant, to his relief, manages to return to the fields in time for the spring planting. The fields sing, rejoicing, upon his return. Goreans are fond of such stories. Their Castes are precious to them.' (Norman, J. Beasts of Gor. 1979. Star. London)

I was very much taken with this excerpt, as it made a cracking 'story dance' and I often thought that it would either make the basis of a good small touring performance or a piece of Machinima. Well, at last we've achieved what we long wanted to do. As the Jewell Theatre has signed up for the 48 hour Machinima competition, we used the Ubar and the Peasant as a dry run. Dorian built a gorgeous set above the theatre, and several of the Cast volunteered to take part. We managed to get all our filming within 3 hours, but my editing skills are still very much in their early stages. Fortunately there are so many fabulous Machinima people who are on hand to give advice - Phaylen Fairchild, BobE Schism, Toxic Menges, Chantal Harvey - I'm so blessed to have their advice. I finished the film at 4am this morning. And as with the earlier films we made - it's been another invaluable learning curve. Check it out at http://www.vimeo.com/14550218 or the first version I did at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl8GkfGXupY

If you're interested in joining the Jewell Theatre or want to be kept up to date with events - please let me know in world.

Plain - the end of the run

Well this weekend sees our last two performances of Plain. It's been an amazing journey. I think we were a little ambitious having 10 cities on our dance card! My bad - I never could say no. This has meant that sometimes we've struggled for audiences as so many of our regular patrons have been waiting for their turn. Last week, sadly, Fort Sar closed shortly before our performance was scheduled to hit their city, and so the cast had Sunday off.

So what's next for the Cast and Crew of the Jewell Theatre. Well buried within the pages of Players of Gor is the story of Petrucchio. Last year we tried to lift this straight from the book and make a play out of it, but of course, in the novel there's many layers to the story as Tarl talks about the politics within the audience. Alas, our version, couldn't encapsulate that and we realised it was just too thin for performance. I've taken the story and embedded it into a larger plot. And so we shall begin work on Vagabonds and Villains toward the end of September.

Between now and then I have entered the Jewell Theatre as a team in the 48 hour Machinima contest for the weekend 17 - 19th September. As a real newbie machinimatographer - I'm nervous as all hell - but I think it should be fun, busy, but fun.

Dorian and myself have managed to bag ourselves roles in a Metaverse TV project. More on this to follow!

If you haven't seen Plain yet - then this weekend is your last chance. We'll be at Rive de Bois on Saturday at 3pm slt and RarlR on Sunday at noon. Shout me in world if you want LM's.

The Gorean Center for the Arts

Tal all!

In an attempt to bring together the efforts of so many of those in SL Gor who are involved with the production and performance of many forms of Gorean entertainment and arts, a new SL group has been formed - "The Gorean Center for the Arts".

Our agenda is to become an active, networking collaboration of several Gorean castes including — but not limited to — the musicians, singers, poets, artists, and other creatives and entertainers living in cities or traveling through the lands of Gor. The GCA is a community for the collaboration and promotion of Gorean theatre, music and other artistic works, as well as providing education and training for those who desire to learn about or perform in these fields.

We hope to promote, inspire and enhance the spread of quality Gorean entertainment, in both performance arts and fine arts for everyone in SL Gor. Members of the GCA are encouraged to promote their events through this group and all are welcomed to participate, both Free and kajiri.

If you are a performer or artist looking for an opportunity to promote your event - or even if you only wish to follow these kinds of activities throughout SL Gor - we welcome you to become part of the GCA today!

All we ask of members is to not post store sales announcements or spam the chat with non-related topics. Posts should only be related to Gorean performance and fine art events.

One of our future objectives include the creation of a central library, which will feature information scrolls specific to examples of entertainers and artists in John Norman's books, as well as an archive of collections of Gorean plays, poetry, art and many other types of performance produced in SL Gor.

Over the next few weeks, we will plan to create a GCA subscription system for those who wish to follow postings but may not want to give up another SL group slot.

If you have any questions about this project, have suggestions, or would like to become a more active participant in the group itself, please drop a notecard to Ketter McAllister, Dorian Cao or Fake Jewell in-world. We'd be happy to hear from you!

I wish you well!

"Plain" Tour Update

I wanted to personally thank the readers of this blog who were able to catch a performance of "Plain" last weekend, along with thanks to our hosts at Dark Storm and The Central Fire, and to Splintered Radio (particularly Drak Outlander, Baroun Tardis, Athan Ansar, and one our own troupe members, Shanta Wulluf) for producing the live broadcast read-throughs of the play during the shows.

We'll be taking off this weekend (RL Independence Day weekend in the U.S.), but the touring company of the Jewell Theatre will be back on the roads of Gor to perform at several locations this July and August, including:
  • Panther Ridge
  • Village of Iskander
  • Tabor
  • Piedmont
  • Kasra
  • Fort Sar
  • Rive de Bois
  • RarlR City
If you haven't had a chance to catch one of our performances, we'll obviously be all over the map and in a place near you soon - perhaps even YOUR own Homestone!

Also, if you're interested in receiving notices on what we're doing and where we'll be next, stop over to the Jewell Theatre in Samandiriel and click on one of the subscription signs to join up (no extra group slot needed). The signs are right out front on the building itself, to the left and right when you walk up the front stairs - they're the red ones with "The Jewell Theatre" on them.

Or, of course, you can follow our adventures right here on the blog.

I wish you well!

Gorean Theatre This Weekend!

Official Press Release (6/25/10):

The Jewell Theatre Company is proud to announce the premiere of its TENTH original Gorean theatrical production "Plain", a drama by Fake Jewell.

"In a world where everyone is beautiful - what defines us? For Isobelle, Tatrix of Tymar, it is the strength of her power and leadership. A strength that both threatens her enemies and unites her Homestone. For the Slaver Travis, a man of legendary reputation with women even among his fellow Goreans, it is his pride of the seduction. A pride that drives him to accept the challenge of seducing the one Free Woman who has become possibly the most powerful virgin of Gor."

The touring company will be performing "Plain" this weekend at the following locations and times:

Saturday, June 26 @ 3pm SLT
Dark Storm, Home of the Tri'Moon Panthers located in Mystic Fire

Sunday, June 27 @ Noon SLT
The Central Fire

A Jewell Theatre flag or banner at both locations will allow you to teleport to the traveling theatre located elsewhere on the sim.

Please note there is some nudity in this performance. Also, be sure to arrive early to get a good seat as space will be limited!

The Jewell Theatre is run by writer/director Fake Jewell, along with a talented cast and crew of volunteers, bringing theatre to the masses of Second Life. Established in 2007, they have written, produced and performed nine original Gorean-themed plays developed specifically for members of the SL Gorean community as well as for those non-Goreans who are avid fans of theatre in Second Life.Their goal is to create entertaining and interactive theatre productions that present the cultural side of Gorean life from many different perspectives, including dramatic and comedic settings.

The show will also be touring several more weekends in a number of cities and villages throughout SL Gor during the months of June, July and August of 2010. Be sure to keep an eye out on where we'll be visiting near you soon!

I wish you well!

The premier of Plain

Tonight is our premier of Plain, a new Gorean themed drama. I can't wait to see how an audience will react to it. Our comedies are always popular, but it's good to get our teeth into a drama every now and then. Plain will run until the first week in August once the tour get's started - but this weekend - it will premier in our own Jewell Theatre on Samandiriel.

You can catch Plain at 1500 Second Life time today - 19th June or tomorrow at noon (20th June) thereafter we'll be touring the performance in a variety of Gorean cities. Contact me in world if you'd like a landmark, or details on the performances around SL.

Gorean Centre for Arts

I've met so many talented people in Second Life: musicians, poets, writers, actors, visual artists, story-tellers, singers - the list is endless. Recently I met a wonderful woman who had perfected a story-telling performance in which she used puppets. Cyon Manga would have loved to join our theatre but her rl shift work schedule meant she couldn't commit to rehearsals or performances.

When the Jewell theatre was first created, we had a performance model of rehearsing the production, putting on two shows and then have a short break before we'd start the cycle again. That's changed now - probably forever. Now we are invited to cities with our travelling theatre. We put down our teleport flags - suspend the theatre in the air, perform our show, pack up and move on to the next city.

It's fantastic that the plays are popular enough to sustain these hefty tour schedules. However it does mean that our beloved Jewell theatre sits empty far more than we anticipated.

Recently at our production meeting we talked about ways we might be able to make the space available to all those talented people. And we started a new group. The Gorean Centre for the Arts Group was born. Created so that we could invite those with an interest in Gorean themed entertainment to find like-minded groups, audiences or a venue. So many sims have struggled to stay open with the pressure of the rl world economy during the last year. Many have looked to the Jewell Theatre to raise their profile and community awareness. However, how many Cities & tribes can host a cast of up to 18 with the 1000 prim count we usually require to create a theatrical production? How brilliant would it be if we had 'something for everyone'?

If you are in the Entertainment Caste, or have an entertainment skill, or are interested in supporting Gorean Arts, I urge you to join our group - and let's see what can develop through Art.
